Jon Roy is a writer, filmmaker, composer, and visual artist. He pursued graduate studies in film at the San Francisco Art Institute with experimental film legends George Kuchar, Ernie Gehr, and Craig Baldwin. His work with composer Charles Boones at SFAI led to a year of intricate study of John Cage and eventually introduced him to the work of Harry Partch. His research interests include: American experimental tradition in music (Partch, Cage, Ives, and Johnston in particular), semiotics of film/music, musical structure, time proportions, and historical tuning systems. His current projects include the new comprehensive biographical documentary Bitter Music: The Life of Harry Partch, A New Dissonance with composer Ben Johnston, who was once Partch’s apprentice, and a book exploring the structural connections between music and the cinema.
